MAR VARAS
For as long as I can remember, art has been an integral part of my life. I love beautiful things and started studying art since childhood. For seven years I spent my summers in Paris committing myself to numerous art courses. Alongside this, I went to a Fine Art school in Madrid.
Soon after, I came to England and completed a B.A. (Hon.) Art in the community and Italian degree at Middlesex University of London. My studies continued at Goldsmiths University of London where I graduated with an M.A. in Applied Anthropology and Community and Youth Work. I then set several art projects in collaboration with the borough of Kensington & Chelsea. I worked with young people through the medium of art in promoting and reinforcing the idea of respect and empowerment within their own communities.
In the past years I have facilitated a number of high profile and very successful projects, one of which was Notting Hill Street Art project where I worked with young people to design murals. Furthermore, I managed a project for the Natural History Museum World Art Department where I helped 15 disadvantaged young people in designing a 15ft-tapestry. These young people collaborated with craftsmen in India who are skilled in tapestry-making and embroidery to produce the final work. The finished tapestry was exhibited in the Natural History Museum. All activities I conducted with young people are accredited through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Besides engaging myself with young people through community art projects, I give art lessons. In particular, I find teaching art to children especially rewarding. To further my love of teaching, I founded Little Artistas, an art school at O2 Centre, and have taught over 500 students in the last twenty six years.
